what we do
A rooflight firm that measures first
Sandbanks Skylights is a skylight and rooflight installer working from Bournemouth across Poole, Christchurch, the edge of the New Forest and the towns and villages of east Dorset. We fit new units into new openings, and we take out tired or misted ones and put a new unit in their place.
The range covers pitched roofs and flat ones: roof windows and VELUX windows for lofts and sloping ceilings, flat rooflights and roof lanterns for extensions, opening and electric units, walk-on glass, conservation-style rooflights and sun tunnels. Each one has its own page under our services.
Every job runs in the same order. The roof is measured first, and the unit is chosen and priced from those readings, so the size on the quote is the size we took.
the approach
Readings taken before the price
Several readings limit which unit will fit. The gap between two rafters sets how wide a roof window can be without cutting timber. The slope of the roof rules out any model or flashing whose rated pitch range it falls outside. On a flat roof, the build-up and the kerb fix whether a unit sits high enough to shed water and whether the opening needs trimming.
To take those readings we go up, with ladders or a tower where it is safe, and into the loft or the room below. We record each reading on a survey sheet and give you a copy with the quote. If a number changes what is possible, the sheet shows why.
You keep the survey sheet whether or not you go ahead with us.
There is a full walk through every reading on the measured survey page.
how a job runs
From first message to the finished ceiling
- You send the enquiry form, an email or a WhatsApp message, ideally with a photo or two of the roof and the room.
- We arrange a time to visit and survey. We measure outside and inside, and check the permission position for your address.
- You receive a written, itemised quote with the survey sheet attached. Nothing is ordered until you accept it.
- We order the unit to the measured size, then fit it, form or flash it into the roof, and make good inside to the standard set out in the quote.
- Where the work is notifiable, we arrange the Building Regulations sign-off and pass you the paperwork.
If you want to understand what drives the figure before anyone visits, our page on what sets the cost explains each line of the quote.
